over 100 years in the baking.

Orwashers Bakery is a New York City institution, founded in 1916 in a small storefront on the Upper East Side. Established by the Orwasher family after immigrating from Hungary to serve the existing Eastern European community, the bakery focused on high quality rye, black and grain breads reflecting the traditions of their homeland. After being passed from generation to generation, Keith Cohen purchased the business from the Orwashers in 2008. Having worked in the New York City bread business for decades, Keith has made it his goal to be a good steward of the commitment to quality and craft of the founding family.

Orwashers continues to be known for its classic versions of the baked goods most closely associated with New York City itself, including rye bread, pumpernickel, bagels, rugelach, babka and black & white cookies. The bakery has also distinguished itself for its high quality handmade European style breads and pastries, along with American standards.

In addition to selling bread to many of New York’s top restaurants and gourmet grocery stores, Orwashers currently operates three retail bakeries and coffee shops - the original on the Upper East Side, a sister Upper West Side location, and the first non-NYC Orwashers located in Roslyn Heights, Long Island (opened in early 2023). Orwashers delivers their breads and baked goods throughout Manhattan and distributes to carefully selected partners nationwide.  While the company has grown since its humble beginnings over a century ago, the same values remain baked in - handmade, classic breads and baked goods made fresh locally with love each day.
